The beam barrier building (garage)

The Kasernenplatz, where the parking Altstadt has been built in 1979, is a neuralgic spot in the city of Lucerne because of the traffic related and urbanistic problems. 2009 Lussi+Halter renovated the parking and added 2 floors.

In order to bear the two additional storeys and to guarantee earthquake protection, one had to reinforce the steel construction.
More striking was the changing of the outside appearance of the functional building. The architects removed the concrete elements from the facades and coated them with white metallically lacquered beam barriers.
In the daytime these white metallic bands are shining and during the night it’s the light from the inside of the building shining through the guide rails.
New elevators, generous glazings on the ground floor and the inside which is painted completely white make the parking bright and clear and give a comfortable perception.
